Zone Plan – Back Entry Hall


I organize and deep clean my home using my Zone Plan. (https://timespaceorg.com/teleclass/) Each month (except for July and December) I concentrate on one zone in my home. In the spring I like to work on my back-entry hall and one storage wall in my laundry room. While this is really two different areas, both are small and when I have completed these areas it means I have completed my whole home and am ready to start again next month.

Although most of my guests enter through the front door, there are times when they do come in the side door. This is also the door that the family uses most of the time. I like this area to be warm and welcoming. I have hung and placed whimsical art here just for fun. This is also an area where incoming and outgoing items are held. Current outerwear is left here on hooks. Cloth grocery bags, when unpacked after a grocery run, are hung here until the next person makes a run to the car. Outgoing mail is laid on the bench until the next run to the post office. While this is a staging area for incoming and outgoing items, nothing is allowed to stay long. The vision for this area is to have a welcoming, uncluttered entrance. Right outside the door are two planters and a whimsical frog to greet you.

The storage hall in my laundry has many purposes. I have a wall unit that holds overflow from other areas in my home. This one wall holds entertainment supplies, recycling bins, a cat box, extra litter, bird seed, tool kits, cleaning products, extra file crates from the office, and a hanging rod for clothes taken from the dryer. What a hodgepodge! Surprisingly, this zone works well. However, as I go through this zone, I look closely at what is there. I purge when I see items that are no longer used or items that got dumped in there because it was handy but that really belong in the storage shed. When I finish this zone there will be less clutter and more open spaces.

At the end of the month, I will reward myself by buying some fresh blooming flowers to place in the pots outside the door.

The Zone Plan – Organizing the Master Bedroom

Once a month I choose a zone in my home to organize, declutter, and deep clean. During one of the spring months I choose to work in our master bedroom. It’s a wonderful time to review the winter wardrobe and clean or repair any favorites before I store them away and to discard anything that I no longer want to wear. It’s also a time when I like to clean the windows and let the sun shine in.

When I start to work in any zone in my home, I start with a vision. Because I share this room with my husband, it needs to be a shared vision. We want this room to have a welcoming presence. We want a calming, relaxing feel and a place to feel happy. We like soft light but still have enough light available to read. My husband meditates here so the room should have an uncluttered, peaceful feel.

I use the whole month to work on this zone and I divide the tasks into four sections. I schedule time on my calendar to complete each task.

One week I organize the closet. Rob stores his hanging clothes in his office closet, so this is a job I do alone. I pull out all m clothes, shoes, and accessories and sort them. I get rid of the ones that no longer fit or that I no longer want to wear. I wash the interior of the closet and then replace all items.

Another week, Rob and I clean out our dressers. We take out every article and toss anything that is damaged and put into a donate box anything sill in good shape, but we don’t want. Winter items go into the lower drawers and summer items come up to the top drawers. Meanwhile, the dresser is washed and waxed.

Still another week we work on the wall where the bed and end tables live. I strip the bed down to the frame and wash everything. The duvet goes to the cleaners and then is stored in the closet until it gets cold again. All extra reading material is removed from the end tables, so we only have what we are currently reading. The end tables are also washed and waxed.

The last week I finish up anything that might not have gotten done. It might be the windows or the overhead fan. It might be dusting down the walls and ceiling or cleaning the throw rugs.

By the end of the month, the room will be sparkly clean and welcoming. I will put out fresh flowers and admire our work. I feel we will sleep even better in the clear, clean bedroom.

Organize Your Office Zone

A new year is beginning. It feels like the right time to set up the home so that it is open to all the new offerings the year will bring.

The reality is that it would be overwhelming to tackle the whole house, so this January I will begin with my office. I have been using the Zone Plan for many years and by the end of this year I will have touched everything in my home. (http://timespaceorg.com/services/)

Over the past year, my files have gotten overfull, project bins need to be updated, new items have come into my office and now the office is feeling a bit crowded. Now is the time to follow the program and work my plan on the office.

1. What is bothering me in my office zone?

  • Loose paper that is not filed
  • Project bins that hold old projects and new projects lying around 
  • Files too full
  • Items lurking on my desk and in the back of my credenza all shouting “Do me!”
2. How do I want my office to look and feel?
  • Look and feel inviting – a place that I enjoy
  • Empty spaces in files and on surfaces that allow for growth
  • Clean and uncluttered
  • Feel productive and energized by the space
3. What do I need to do to make this vison come true?
  • Clean out files
  • Shred and archive papers
  • Clear out desk drawers
  • Purge project bins and update them with current projects
  • Deep clean the room
4. Schedule time for each task.
  • Review calendar and see what times are available
  • Schedule reasonable times for each task
  • Write times to work on the calendar and honor that commitment
By the end of the month, I will call whatever has been accomplished “good enough” and move on to the next zone. The office is now ready for regular maintenance until next January. I always reward myself by buying a fresh flower for my desk.

The Zone Plan: Organizing Your Entry Hall

I am sure some of the items can be purged, like that container of cat food the cat will no longer eat. Some items get dumped in here that really belong in the storage shed so now is the time to move them to their final destination. When I am finished, there will be less clutter and more open spaces.

Organizing Your Guest Bedroom or Bonus Room

Most guest bedrooms rarely see a guest but when company comes, it’s great to have a space available for them to sleep. But, it’s rare to have space for a room that only has the function of sleeping guests.

When I look at my guest bedroom and focus on the functions of this space, I note that there are many. The room has a closet used for offsite office storage and some personal pictures. There us a dresser that holds off season clothing, gifts, holiday cards, and some memorabilia. There is also a cat condo (and who am I kidding, also the bed) that is used by my cat to sleep in the sun.

But when overnight guests arrive, this is their room. I want the area to be open and inviting to my guests. I want all my items out of sight but easily accessible.

I maximize my closet by using elfa shelving, but once a year I rearrange and purge items I feel I no longer need. I look through all my pictures and usually toss a few that are near duplicates or do not really speak to me anymore. I feel if I want to keep my memorabilia, I ought to honor it and look at it at least once a year. By purging and reorganizing, I allow space for items I have stacked on the bed that have been purged from my office zone last month.

My dresser also has zones within the drawers. I look at the clothing stored there and toss what I no longer think is necessary or I no longer love. I organize gifts and cards I have stashed in one drawer and look over any stored memorabilia. I set aside some empty space for a guest to use.

By the end of the month, I have this guest bedroom matching my vision for the upcoming year. I celebrate by putting fresh flowers on the dresser.

Organizing the Office Using the Zone Plan


It is the beginning of a new year and January is Get Organized Month. I would love for my whole house to be magically clean and organized. However, the reality is that I am the one that has to make that magic happen and it would be crazy to think that I could do it all at once. That is why for years I have been maintaining my home using a Zone Plan. This plan has me touching everything in my home at least once a year. (http://timespaceorg.com/services/) 


The first zone I work on each year is my office. In the past year files have gotten overfull, project bins are hanging around even after projects are completed. New items have come into my office and it is now feeling a bit crowded. Now is the time to follow the program and work my plan on the office.

Plan for 2017

2016 is coming to a close. It is great to look back and see all that was accomplished. With that fresh in mind, let’s make plans for the upcoming year. I have done my business goals, chosen my word of the year (release), and am now scheduling things I want to accomplish in this coming year.

One of the first things I do when I set up my calendar is divide my home into 10 zones. Every month except July and December, I work on one zone in my home. The goal is that by the end of the year I have touched everything I own and have let go of things I no longer need or love. I have also organized the items I have decided to keep.

This has worked so well for me over the years that a couple of years back I set up a Zone Plan Teleclass to lead others through the process. I love the way the plan has developed and the wonderful people who participate in the teleclass. It is an ongoing class and anyone can join at anytime but because I like new beginnings, I would love to invite you to join us now. Reflection


The year is drawing to a close. It is a good time to find some quiet time and reflect on the past year and look forward to the new year. I challenge you to try this exercise.

  • List at least 3 experiences or events that were wonderful this past year. What insights did you receive from these delightful experiences?
  • Think of a couple of things that did not go quite the way you wanted. What did you learn about yourself from this?
  • What is your vision for the upcoming year?
  • Brainstorm a list of what you have to do to make this vision come true?
  • What stumbling blocks might impede you and how will you deal with them?
  • From your brainstorm list, pick one small thing and schedule time to work on it.
In going through this exercise myself, I have found it helpful to also work on a vision board. I also find that sharing my thoughts with others helps me gain clarity. I focus on only those thoughts and actions that come from me and that I can control. Let this time moving forward be our best personal year yet.

Organizing Your Kitchen

October is the perfect time to organize your kitchen. The next few months will involve a lot of holiday cooking. Food drives ramp up so it is a great opportunity for you to donate various foods you have overstocked this past year.

Kitchen Strategy:

  1. Look at your motivation. What is bothering you at this time in your kitchen? Are your counter tops cluttered? Do you have trouble finding needed items in your pantry? Do you have items taking up space in your freezer that  you can’t even identify?
  2. Create your vision. How do you want your kitchen to look and how do you want to feel when you are in your kitchen? Do you want an open light filled space? Do you want space in your kitchen to do larger school or church food projects? Do you want to display some pottery or seasonal items that will make you smile every time you enter your kitchen?
  3. Brainstorm. List all the things you can think of that will make your kitchen match your vision. Some of these tasks might include: Clearing out all items you no longer need or love, looking for new storage ideas, organizing items for more convenience, setting up kitchen zones (food preparation, cooking, dishes,, food storage, and food serving). 
  4. Write out your goals. Writing the goals helps you focus. Your goals should be positive, consistent with your vision, specific and measurable, reasonable yet challenging.
  5. Develop your timeline. Here is where your calendar becomes your best friend. Look at what times you have available to work on this zone. Be reasonable. Plan for some unexpected things to come up. Break projects down into small parts. Instead of booking a day of “organizing kitchen drawers”, schedule “organizing the knife drawer” on Oct. 4 at 3:00.
  6. Now just follow the timeline. Honor the scheduled times you have set aside to do the tasks that are on your calendar. By the end of the month you will love your newly organized space and feel ready for the holidays.
  7. Reward yourself. Buy some flowers. Prepare a special meal. Do something to congratulate yourself on a job well done.
